“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Except, with respect to Mr Shakespeare, I’m not sure it does. This blog is aimed at writing about plant histories and understanding their names and the relationships humans have had with them before and after their “discovery” by western science. These names and stories were often ignored and erased, and subsequently end up relatively unknown by the people planting them in gardens in the UK today.

I am a plant science student and ethnobotanist living and working in Cornwall, UK, with a previous background in ethnomusicology. I wanted to learn more about these plant histories, and will use this blog to share what I learn.

For more information on how I ended up writing this blog, the very first post gives the full story.
